Last updated: April 18, 2026
Adding a caption
- Open a photo in the survey gallery.
- Click the caption field below the photo.
- Type your caption (up to 150 characters).
- The caption saves automatically.
Where captions appear
- Survey gallery. Displayed below each photo thumbnail
- Photo detail view. Shown alongside GPS data and metadata
- PDF reports. Printed under each photo in the generated report
- Client share links. Visible to clients viewing the shared project
Captions are one of the most visible pieces of information in your reports. Write them for your client, not just yourself.
Caption best practices
Be specific
| Vague | Specific |
|---|---|
| Wall damage | North wall crack at second floor junction |
| Roof | Southwest corner, missing shingles near gutter |
| Pipe | 3-inch PVC drain line, basement utility room |
| Exterior | East elevation, main entrance |
Include location references
Describe where in the building or site the photo was taken. Your client was not there with you. They need spatial context.
Note defects and observations
If you are documenting an issue, state what the issue is. "Cracked foundation, approximately 4 feet in length" is more useful than "foundation."
Keep it concise
You have 150 characters. That is enough for a clear description but not a paragraph. Focus on the essential detail.
Write for the report reader
Your caption will appear in a PDF that someone else reads. Use terminology your client understands. Avoid internal shorthand that only your team would recognize.
Bulk captioning tips
When you upload a large batch of photos, captioning each one individually takes time. Here are strategies to speed up the process:
- Caption as you shoot. Make a voice memo or quick note for each photo while you are still in the field. Memories fade by the time you sit down to caption.
- Use consistent formatting. Pick a pattern like "[Location] - [Observation]" and apply it across all photos. Example: "Roof, west side - ponding water near drain."
- Caption the most important photos first. If you are short on time, prioritize photos that document defects, damage, or key findings.
Limits
- Maximum length: 150 characters per caption
- Required: No, but photos without captions are flagged by validation
